Fun With Fabric: No-Sew Pennant

Do you ever find a fabric that you want to cuddle up and fall asleep with? Sometimes I find such a great pattern that I just stare at it, run my fingers over it and fold and re-fold it until I realize how crazy I look.

That's pretty much sums up my obsession with Holly Holderman's Dolly Dresses for Lakehouse Fabrics line.

My husband is a very kind man, but I'm sure he would put his foot down if I attempted to decorate our bedroom with such girly-ness. Luckily, I have a daughter! This fabric is PERFECT for her room. I plan on starting a quilt for her new "big-girl" bed soon. But for the time being, I made a no-sew pennant:

Instead of binding or fabric, I used lace to string my flags together:

I used a bit of the fabric to dress up a picture frame in her room too. Rose prints make me drool:

I thought of writing up an entire tutorial for the pennant, but it was so drop-dead simple there really isn't any point. All you need is:
-A few scraps of beautiful fabric (maybe an 1/8 yard of each)
-Lace trim from the fabric store
-Heat N Bond tape

I even made my own stencil for the bunting out of a scrap of cardboard:

Cut out your flags, pin them where you want on the lace, add the bonding tape, iron and you're done! Very easy, and I have a ton of fabric left over. Can't wait to use it!

I'll be linking up to these great parties!

Frankly My Dear...

I DO give a damn. Have you seen the new Gone With the Wind fabric (and here, and here)? How cool is that? And the above quilt! What I wouldn't give for a bundle to make that with! I still usually rate GWTW as my favorite movie, even though I rarely watch it anymore. But when I was a pre-teen I could spend days watching it over and over, dreaming about how wonderful it must be to be Scarlett and wear all those wonderfully huge hoop dresses. Ahhh... Anyway, I just wanted to share.

I Heart the Postal Service

I've always loved getting the mail. I suppose this proves that I really am a "glass half full" type of gal (I wonder sometimes). Instead of worrying about what bills or notices I might receive, I always think of the possibility of the random refund checks, letters or (!) magazines I might be getting. Today, I got my new favorite type of mail--a bundle of fabrics!
Finn's personal pick for his quilt (for the backing): My fat-quarter picks (for the top):
Here he is, already naming the robots:

Dee's Basket No. 3

Before I took a quilting class, I always thought that the term "quilting" refered to the sewing of all the blocks together. That's really the piecing. Quilting is when you bind together the pieced top, batting and fabric backing, usually by sewing a cool design through all layers. Here is the pieced top of my Dee's Basket: I'm not sure when I will get around to actually quilting it since I got my layer cake in the mail today! A layer cake is a bunch of 10" fabric squares. I'm using these to make Kinley a crib quilt. More on that later.
